The film support is redone to benefit films in Swedish
Languages and context criteria will be more important to fulfill for the filmmaker who hopes for production and development support from the Swedish Film Institute. If you want to have a chance on support, the film's language should be Swedish and the context that it takes place in being Swedish.
The change is made according to Anna Croneman, CEO, so that Swedish authors, actors and film workers in the future can be active in Sweden, but also for the Swedish audience to have access to film in Swedish in a Swedish context.
– We want to secure, through the change in the criteria, that in the future you should be able to see and make Swedish film in Sweden, not disappear the film that is made, she says.
When it comes to it The language criterion also prioritizes films in the national minority languages Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib and Sami. What may be considered to be a Swedish context will consulting the Film Institute's consultants in each individual project.
In the future, the Swedish Film Institute will support at most two international films per year. The support will also be reserved for projects with a producer and a director who has previously produced or directed film in Sweden for a Swedish audience.
In the decision on the change Leans the Swedish Film Institute against the EU Directive for State Aid, which, among other things, gives Member States the opportunity to prioritize support for films in national languages and to works that reflect the Member State's culture.
The reason for the decision is partly that the economic conditions have recently deteriorated, but also that among Swedish filmmakers there is a great interest in making international films.
– We have seen an increase in, not least, young filmmakers who want to go out into the world. At the same time, we are down to support about ten to fifteen Swedish films per year, compared with 25 a number of years ago. Then we must prioritize and have a different requirement, says Anna Croneman.
Among the latest the years Goldbag winners are several films that do not meet any of the requirements for language and context. Among other things, Ruben Östlund's « Triangle of Sadness », Nathalie Álvarez Mesén's « Clara Sola » and most recently Levan Akin's film « Passage ». However, Anna Croneman is careful not to put a stop to support for that kind of films.
– We do not provide support to more than maybe one or two such films a year already as it is. With the change, we clarify that the opportunity to get out into the world still exists, she says.
