The fiercest competition in municipal elections in Jekabpils region, the smallest

In total, 5,975 candidates, or 8.2 candidates per deputy, claim for 731 municipal deputy. 340 candidate lists have been submitted to the local elections, or on average eight lists per municipality.

The most intense competition for one deputy has been announced in Jekabpils region. There are 260 candidates for 19 deputies, which means that almost 14 people stand for a single chair.

In Riga, 743 people stand for 60 deputies, which means more than 12 people in one place. In third place with the highest number of candidates per deputy is Jurmala. There are 172 people standing for 15 seats, which means that more than 11 people stand for one chair.

Smiltene, Valka and Ventspils regions are the smallest competition per deputy. In Smiltene County, less than five people are standing for one deputy, but in Ventspils County, 56 people are nominated for 15 seats, or less than four people in the chair.

Most candidate lists were submitted in Riga – 16, Jekabpils county – 13 and 12 in Jelgava.

3,671 candidates, or approximately 61.4% of the total number is male and 2304 are women. The average age of candidates is 47.4 years. 34 persons who are only 18 years old and 23 persons over 80 are standing for the position of a local government deputy. The senior candidate in these municipal elections is 88 years old.

31 people are 19 years old and 30 candidates are 20 years old. Most candidates are between the ages of 41 and 50 – 1565. 1407 candidates are between 51 and 60. 192 candidates are between 71 and 80 years old.

4167 candidates (less than 70%) have higher education, 1644 with average, while 164 candidates (less than 3%) have basic education.

Six of the candidates have German citizenship, three people have British citizenship in addition to Latvian citizenship, and two candidates have US citizenship. People who have Finnish, Ireland and Australia are also nominated in local elections.

4,832 candidates (~ 81%) have indicated that there are Latvians, 302 or about 5% are Russians, 56 candidates have indicated that there are Poles, 38 candidates for nationality are Ukrainians and 22 are Belarusians. Five people have indicated that there are Germans by nationality. 682 of the candidates have chosen not to indicate their nationality.

4238 have identified the declared place of residence as the reason for the candidacy, 810 candidates – the declared place of residence and the real estate, and 343 have indicated the job as the reason for the candidacy. 346 The municipality has chosen to stand as a candidate because they own real estate.

More than 10% of the candidates live in Riga, 4.2% in Jekabpils region and 3.3% in Jurmala. 3.2% of candidates live in Jelgava district and 3.1% in Kekava district. One candidate has stated that he has no residence in Latvia.

Candidate lists had to be submitted remotely in the application provided by the National Digital Development Agency or in person in the relevant municipal election commission.

The list of candidates submitted remotely and the documents attached to the Election Commission were examined within one day from the date of receipt. In turn, the list of candidates submitted in person and the documents attached to the Municipal Election Commission were checked at the time of submission of the candidate list.

Now the municipal election commissions will have to organize a draw number of the list of candidates. The lottery must take place at the open meeting of the Election Commission, attended by authorized representatives of the list of registered candidates. Media representatives are also invited to the meeting.

It has already been reported that the submission of the lists started on March 19 and ended on April 8. Municipal elections will take place in early June.
