Since autumn 2021, Saarelainen worked at the University of Vaasa and at the same time received a salary for full -time work in the Security Police. The Security Police became aware that 50 % of the working time of the Saarela had been agreed at the university, which Saarelainen had not reported to Supo.

Saarelainen denied that he had spent working time to take care of the side operation. He said he had taken care of the part -time work on holidays and vacations.

Saarelainen retired from the Security Police in 2022. He also previously worked as Director General of the Agency of the Immigration Service's predecessor of the Finnish Immigration Service.
