The European Parliament agrees 90% of importers not to tax for CO2 emissions

The European Parliament agreed on Thursday to change the new rules requiring importers of products designed on energy -intensive technologies using large CO2 fuel emissions not to be taxed when marketing them in the EU.

The European Commission has proposed changes to the EU Carbon Correction Mechanism at the CBAM (CBAM), introduced with a green deal to ease the business and make it more competitive.

Members of the European Parliament have supported a new minimum mass threshold to be taxed of 50 tonnes. This would release the majority (90%) of importers – mainly small and medium -sized enterprises and individuals who import small quantities of CBAM goods. According to the EPP, which is one of the hottest reasons for the simplification of the mechanism, the liberation from taxation will cover 182,000 importers.

The environmental goals of CBAM remain achievable, as 99% of total CO2 emissions from iron, steel, aluminum, cement and fertilizer imports will still be covered by the rules, according to a statement from parliament.

The changes also simplify the process of resolving the declarators (countries wishing to import goods subject to CBAM), calculating the emissions and management of CBAM financial responsibility, while enhancing the provisions for combating abuse, Parliament, where 564 MPs supported them and only 20 were against.

MEPs must now persuade Member States to limit themselves to small and medium -sized companies before it becomes clear what part of CBAM will remain in force.

The carbon emissions correction mechanism are not yet fully applied as it is in a pilot phase. Through it, the fee is not paid, and the importers only register the type and quantities of goods to be taxed.

The mechanism aims to prevent exports of EU polluting production, as strict eco -standards make them too expensive. This is done by determining the price on CO2 emissions in the import of materials such as cement, iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen, some precursors and products down the chain.
