The full statement of the Speaker, Elisa Spiropali:
The European Parliament’s Foreign Commission approved yesterday the report on Albania, which analyzes our situation and progress on the path to European integration for 2023 and 2024.
The report, compiled by the reporter on Albania, Andreas Schieder, who expresses gratitude for the serious and effective work, was approved with 57 votes in favor, 11 against, 6 abstentions and will be submitted to a plenary session of the European Parliament in July.
Gratitude for MEPs for the clear support of Albania’s anvancing towards EU membership.
Yesterday, the European Parliament once again confirmed that Albania remains a success story, a vanguard country for membership and an example in the region.
The report clearly underlines Albania’s sustainable commitment to key reforms, including strengthening the rule of law, the functioning of justice institutions emerging from the reform, the protection of fundamental and minority rights, and the progress in the fight against corruption and organized crime.
MEPs welcome the wider political consensus and strong public support for EU membership, Albania’s full, continuing and loyal lid with EU foreign and security policy.
MEPs appreciate Albania’s constructive role in the region, unwavering support for EU foreign policy, and commitment to managing common challenges such as migration, cyber security and energy.
It was very important and very encouraging that MEPs welcomed Albania’s objective of closing membership negotiations by the end of 2027.
It was a significant fact that deputies of the Albanian Parliament were also present at that session, both by the majority and the opposition, which was also mentioned by the Committee’s leader as a sign of the special attention of the Assembly for a process that we have defined as vital to our country.
