The End and the Future
We live in last two intense weeks.
Let’s start with the most striking event: a good man died.
Pope Francis will be sorely missed. It is not perceived the precipitation of the end, but the legacy is kindness and hope.
Our dear Pope Francis who is already missing us, was the proof, sadly, that even the leader and almost almighty cannot change the institutions, the people and the world.
It is a fact that makes me sad, devastated and irritates (as André Ventura said to Pedro Nuno Santos in the last debate).
I still believe that good men can change the world and leave a better world to the coming generations.
Seeing let’s go what conclave it starting on May 7th will not reserve, in the certainty that “qui intrat papabile, exit cardinali”.
At the same time, Portugal also lives different times and, whether we want not, this regime and this actors, unfortunately, no longer represent us or motivate us.
The unusual moment lived last Monday (April 28, 2025), the “blackout”, demonstrates well the mediocrity in which we become. It was the proof that we became a country “extinguished, exogenous and a protective”, In which“the creed of the market and price replaced the creed of values”As well defined and identified Professor Adriano Moreira.
Portugal can neither be dependent nor hostage to controversial actions (as we will know for the coming days), neither from third countries nor, much less, decisions of private companies (such as REN). In addition to the necessary national strategy, the Energy Strategic Reserve is obvious and has to exist. Finally, I cannot help highlighting the absence of our president during this time.
Portugal decharacterized. Lost the necessary strategy and lost the unique identity. We really need to be Portugal again, with a clear and one strategy, with identity, with values and, therefore, with dignity and future.
I feel and I consider that we are today without the world. Today we have no idea what is going on around the world, especially in countries and extraordinary regions, but we are completely unaware of. We live and drink decontextualized ideas, we lose secular relationships just because we no longer know what we always know: having the world and being of the world.
For example, I have just arrived from Istanbul and Baku, extraordinary cities and part of countries that have much more to do with us than we think. Believe it or not, I felt at home.
But what is the current relationship of Portugal with Turkey and Azerbaijan? Practically null.
However, daily the Turkish people call for Portugal by asking for an orange orange/orange juice or, Azeibaijan thanks to Lisbon and Portugal for the guarantee of recognition its territory, ratified and guaranteed by the UN in 1996 at the Lisbon Conference.
And what has Portugal has done and does for these relationships of the future? Nothing! Strictly nothing! For example, Azerbaijan (Energy Strategic Country in Europe) has even embarrassed in Portugal and we nothing, neither a consulate or consul, nor a decent state visit, despite the various warnings made to the last governments and leaders.
The world is changing and Portugal cannot limit to usual partners. We need and have to guarantee new different and bold strategies partnerships. Do not continue in this “amateurism and bimbatince”, forgetting countries of the present and future European future with whom we are also fortunate to commune history and where we also have Portuguese in strategic projects.
We need interested and interesting Portuguese.
We need a country and a world leadership, so we can aim to be the country that we have been and we will be: more serious, more open, more dealer and therefore a serious country.
Portugal needs to be Portugal again.
