The EC announces extraordinary security measures
Bird flu is an acute infectious disease that is a great threat. The European Commission monitors the situation in all Member States on an ongoing basis. However, as representatives of the EC point out, the situation in Poland requires immediate and decisive actions due to the high risk of the disease spread.
The threat of bird flu in Poland. EC reacts
The European Commission announced that it would decide next week to introduce extraordinary funds in five voivodships in Poland: Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Łódź, Mazowieckie, Warmian-Masurian and Greater Poland. This decision is related to the intensification of bonfires of bird flu, which in recent months has caused serious concerns about sanitary and veterinary safety in the country.
According to the spokeswoman for the European Commission Eva Hrnczirova, The situation in Poland is currently considered « particularly unfavorable » against the background of the entire European Union. Over the past two months, a total of 73 outbreaks have been detected in the country, of which as many as 53 cases were confirmed in the Mazowieckie and Greater Poland voivodships.
What are the reasons for the spread of bird flu?
Commission experts indicate that one of the main factors contributing to the rapid spread of the HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) virus is High concentration of poultry farms in specific regions of Poland.
Therefore, some areas in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Łódź, Mazowieckie, Warmian-Masurian and Greater Poland provinces in Poland, where there is a high density of poultry plants, can be considered as high-risk areas of HPAI spread
Hrnczirova told.
The situation is additionally complicated by the spring migration of wild birds. According to the commission data, during this period an increase in the number of bonfires detected in wild species was noted, which significantly increases the likelihood of transferring the virus to breeding poultry.
New extraordinary measures – what do they mean for Poland?
Although the details of the planned activities have not yet been officially presented, the EC already emphasizes the need to implement extraordinary precautions. They are to apply primarily to the so -called high -risk zones – i.e. areas where the threat to poultry farming is the greatest.
« These funds will be adopted by the Commission next week, » confirmed the spokeswoman for the EC. In practice, they can mean tightening the principles of biosecurity, restrictions on poultry transport, temporary closing of some farms, as well as increased veterinary control.
