The earthquakes probably tertonic
There has been some earthquake activity in Grímsey in recent days. Thorvaldur Þórðarson volcano says the earthquake is not unreasonable, but does not exclude magma movement.
« This is on the Tjörnes fracture belt. On the Kópaskers line it seems to me, » says Thorvaldur in a conversation with mbl.is.
« It may well be that there is some magma movement associated with this, but I still think it is much more likely that these are just tektonical earthquakes on the Tjörnes fracture belt and then the Kópasker line. »
Not unusual
The Tjörnes fracture belt connects the North Gospel belt and the Kolbeinseyjar spine north into the sea, and Thorvald says it is not unusual for earthquakes to be detected in this area. Mercury movement cannot be excluded as volcanic eruption has occurred on the belt before.
However, the earthquakes are measured at a depth of 9 to 10 kilometers, which further indicates that there is a movement.
Regular earthquakes have also been detected for the past 24 hours on the Kolbeinseyjarhrys, and Thorvaldur believes there may be more uncertainty about the earthquake.
« These are recordings. On recordings, you can have both tektonical movements and such magma that can cause earthquakes, and this is either. »
