The doctors were wrong for a decade. A man with a rare tumor in the stomach
Thomas K. emigrated from Germany to Barda in the province of Troms, Norway in 2008. There he worked as an optician, and his wife Ines was employed in the local health service. For the first few years in exile, everything was perfect. However, in 2011, Germany began to have serious problems – his stomach suddenly began to get bigger. After Thomas K.’s stomach enlarged in an uncontrolled way, in 2012 doctors initially diagnosed with an optics overweight and type 2 diabetes. However, his body matured another, much more dangerous disease.
Twelve years have passed before the doctors managed to diagnose a malignant tumor in the stomach of a desperate German. « The belly became bigger. I walked from doctor to the doctor until in 2019 they finally agreed to surgery to reduce the stomach » – says Thomas K. for in an interview with « Bild ».
« Doctors always talked only about obesity and diabetes. I got to ozempic on diabetes, and before reducing the stomach for several years I had to go to nutrition and fitness classes. » – he adds.
It wasn’t until 2023 – twelve years after the first symptoms appeared – one of the doctors looked at the case thoroughly, after which he made the correct diagnosis. The doctor conducted preliminary tests in terms of decreasing the stomach when he realized that a large belly had nothing to do with fat. « He pressed my stomach. He was hard, not soft, as is the case with fat » – recalls Thomas K.
« After changing the diet and ozempic, I lost so much that I was very thin on my face and shoulders. Only the stomach was huge. The doctor even said that I was actually malnourished. » – adds a German living in Norway. The medic commissioned computed tomography and then it came to light: it was a tumor!
« It was really a shock for me. The disease attacked my kidney because the tumor settled the right kidney, » says the emigrant. Two more weeks have passed before the doctors were sure that this is a rare fat tumor in which several cancer centers are closed. For the purpose of cancer surgery, Thomas K. traveled 1500 kilometers to Oslo, to the university hospital. The operation carried out on September 26, 2023 lasted ten hours.
Three surgeons were needed to remove the tumor. Amazing tumor dimensions: 27.3 kg of weight, 52.3 cm in diameter. Unfortunately, the tumor caused extensive damage for over a decade, so it was necessary to remove the right kidney and part of the small intestine.
Thomas K. feels better today, but the disease still reflects on his psyche. « I go to a psychologist every two weeks. I have to go to an oncologist twice a year, because I still have cancer tissue that grows. I was told that it cannot be removed because it is connected to many organs. » – confesses the patient.
A pair of Germans filed a lawsuit against doctors who were dismissed at first instance. This type of cancer occurs so rarely that you can’t blame doctors, as the court found. However, Thomas K. remains sure of his right and intends to appeal against the sentence.
