Five years later, the protest is gone, and the BLM monument was removed in front of the White House, which is why many wonder if the movement missed the opportunity for historical changes because it failed to win the American public.

Commemoration – George Floyd
Despite the widespread dismay of racism and police brutality after Floyd’s death in May 2020, many were distant after BLM activists began to seek the abolition of police funding.

– The moral clarity of 2020 is not translated into enough political courage – said Phillip Solomon, professor of African American studies and psychology at Yale University for AFP.

Medaria Arradondo, who was the first black Chief of the Minneapolis police when Floyd was killed, told AFP that he was concerned that there could be « fatal consequences » if additional reforms were not implemented.
« I hope and I ask that we, as a nation, are not going to the new critical crisis, » he said.
The National Human Rights Group Urban League this month has announced a report warning that marginalized communities « deeperly pushed into modus survival » after Floyd’s death.
