The death of George Floyd has turned Black Lives Matter into one of the biggest protest movements!

The anger of George Floyd’s police murder has transformed the anti -Raksist initiative of Black Lives Matter into one of the biggest protest movements in American history, and angry crowds shouted slogan at Los Angeles to Washington.

Five years later, the protest is gone, and the BLM monument was removed in front of the White House, which is why many wonder if the movement missed the opportunity for historical changes because it failed to win the American public.

Despite the widespread dismay of racism and police brutality after Floyd’s death in May 2020, many were distant after BLM activists began to seek the abolition of police funding.

National support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now 52 percent, according to the Pew Research Center, which is 15 percentage points less than in June 2020, a month after police officer Derek Chauvin killed Floyd during the arrest in Minneapolis.

Floyd’s death was originally considered to be a catalyst for national changes with similar movement for civil rights from the 1960s.

The protests, some of which turned to riots, spread the earth, all the way to the White House door, where Donald Trump held his first presidential term.

The energy that was accumulating during ‘Lockdown’ during the pandemic of Covida further increased the anger that gathered around BLM, then loose organization founded in 2013 for protest against racially motivated violence.

The activists soon expanded their focus to systematic racism, removed slave -owners’ monuments, and some companies have invested in initiatives to encourage diversity to support ethnic minorities.

Missed opportunity

Despite the ambition, experts say that Blm has achieved « very little ».

– The moral clarity of 2020 is not translated into enough political courage – said Phillip Solomon, professor of African American studies and psychology at Yale University for AFP.

The law named after George Floyd about the fair treatment of the police, who, among other things, proposed a national ban on dangerous suffocation at arrest, did not vote. Solomon said that Floyd’s murder, which he called « Linca », opened the possibility to change that was missed and now encounters opposition.

The fact that Trump has been chosen for the second time despite his controversial statements related to Rasa and the great support of the extreme right -wing personality reflects deeply rooted tension, he said.

« I think this moment is a microcosm of America, » Solomon added.

Racred inequality has long been causing protests in the United States, where segregation was legally completed only in the 1960s after the tireless campaign of marches and civil disobedience. Floyd’s death has occurred in the context of dozens of other prominent cases of police brutality against blacks, which can now be quickly documented and divided by smartphones and social networks.

‘Undone from revenge’

There were police reforms in some federal countries that are primarily focused on restricting the force that officials may use and send unarmed persons instead of police officers to certain emergency interventions. However, many claim that these measures are insufficient.

Medaria Arradondo, who was the first black Chief of the Minneapolis police when Floyd was killed, told AFP that he was concerned that there could be « fatal consequences » if additional reforms were not implemented.

« I hope and I ask that we, as a nation, are not going to the new critical crisis, » he said.

The National Human Rights Group Urban League this month has announced a report warning that marginalized communities « deeperly pushed into modus survival » after Floyd’s death.

Organization President Marc Morial claims that the steps have been done to combat racial injustices « canceled from revenge. »

Trump’s Ministry of Justice has been interrupted by all investigations related to civil rights, which began the administration of the previous President Joe Biden, completed the supervision agreements over the police and reduced positive discrimination in employment.

Some of Trump’s more extreme supporters sought Chauvina pardon. But Arradondo says he is still optimistic.

– History has shown that we are making changes gradually. We will have a lot of hard work in front of us, but I believe we will succeed, ”he said.
