The Date Center revealed the technical cause of a failure that struck millions of Ukrainians
The DE Novo explained why for the first time in almost 15 years an incident occurred, during which the Kiev Data Center was left without electricity for 14 minutes. This caused a large -scale failure: on April 26, the Action, Nova Poshta and banking terminals were not working on April 26.
EP journalists visited the Data Center in Kiev and talked with the company management about the details of the event.
De Novo serves more than 150 clients, including Oschadbank, Raiffeisen Bank, Nova Poshta, Kernel, Kyiv Digital, Action Application and others. Approximately 70% of customers use the company’s cloud services, including a private cloud, and the remaining 30% place their own equipment in the date center.
April 26 EP reportedthat the cause of the failure was not a cyberattack. The main version of the company calls the problem that arose during the final stage of replacement of uninterrupted power sources.
To provide continuous power supply, engineers used a temporary power jumper. At 8:03 in the morning, according to the plan, the switch was transferred to the « off » position, preparing to connect the new line. But because of the mechanical defect, the switch did not work completely, though it showed that everything was switched off.
When the power was fed through the new line and through the jumper at the same time, the automation perceived it as a serious error and turned off the system to prevent the accident.
The power supply was restored in 14 minutes. However, due to the complexity of the systems, the complete restoration of the DE Novo cloud infrastructure lasted until 9:45, and some client IT systems have been restored for several hours. In general, the consequences of the incident were eliminated by 13:00.

CEO de Novo Maxim Ageev explained that it was almost impossible to predict such a situation – the switch did not go to the desired position, although the indication showed that everything is normal.
« In more than 5000 days of work of the Date Center since November 2010, this is the first stop of 15 minutes. Our contracts provide up to 96 minutes for a year and service without stopping the services, so the incident has not become a ground for reviewing transactions, » said Ageev.
According to him, the engineers of the company of energy equipment, which is installed at the Schneider Electric Date Center, arrived at the place. The chief engineer of the Date Center Alexander Yurchenko added that this switch has been working since 2018.
