The crisis on the Damen yard. « I found solutions »

The Mai 2 Naval Shipyard in Mangalia now has clear long -term development opportunities, to keep the jobs of the people and the functional site, says the Minister of Economy, Bogdan Ivan, after the representatives of the Navalist union have announced protests in the Capital for Friday.

In a post on his Facebook page, the relevant minister states that, in February this year, he received the Navalists at the Ministry of Economy, listened to the dissatisfaction of the trade union representatives and discussed with the leaders of the companies involved.

‘By decisive actions, we found concrete solutions to continue the work on the Mangalia shipyard: over 800 active employees will receive salaries in two installments: 60% of the amount will be paid between May 12 and 16, and the remaining 40% at the end of the month, between 26 and 30. We have identified 13 additional naval repairs projects, which will start immediately, to support the company’s financial recovery – we will cover the operational costs and ensure the resumption of outstanding payments starting in August. We have already signed a repair contract for 4 Portcontainer ships of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, world leader in the field of maritime transport. Tomorrow morning, I will receive union performances again. We now have clear long -term development opportunities that keep people’s jobs and the functional yard, ‘Bogdan Ivan wrote.

The free trade union (SLN) will organize two protest actions on Friday, in front of the Ministry of Economy and in front of the Government, in the context of aggravating the situation from Damen Shipyards Mangalia (DSMA), the largest naval site in Romania, according to a statement of the unionists.

Navalists demand urgent actions from the Romanian state for the recovery of the Mangalia naval site, in insolvency and with temporarily suspended activity of June 2024.

In the protests scheduled between 11:30 – 13:30 at the Ministry of Economy and 13:30 – 15:00, the participation of approximately 200 people – union and employees of DSMA is estimated.

‘The purpose of the protests: the transmission of a desperate appeal to the representatives of the Romanian state to urgently intervene in support of this strategic objective on the verge of collapse. Current context: The site’s activity is interrupted for over 11 months (from June 2024); Most employees are in technical unemployment; The salary rights related to the last two months were not paid; Easter premium and other rights stipulated in the collective labor agreement were not granted; The compensatory salaries for the available employees were paid only in part; Only part of the employees involved in the repair works and those delegated in other naval sites in Romania were paid, and they are delayed; There is a risk that neither in this month nor in the following months the salaries, in the absence of concrete support measures, can be paid, « the statement said.

The SLN urgently requests the full payment of the outstanding salaries and the rights provided in the CCM, real government support and immediately for financing the site activity, concluding a new association contract with a serious and competent investor, elaborating and applying a clear strategy for saving and relaunching this strategic objective.
