No propagandistic formula or informal understanding with Brussels can cover the legitimacy that could be outlined in the absence of a real clarification in the conditions in which the elections will take place.
The Trump administration, located in a process of political reconsolidation, suspiciously concerns certain maneuvers in European states, invoking the defense of democracy, but considering a much more ambitious strategic objective: deep division-or even disintegration-the European Union. A Europe with all possible voices becomes, in this logic, a space easier to control geopolitically.
The irony causes yesterday’s anti-Americans to become a zealous supporters of a pro-American policy without coherence and strategic content. Romania does not have to opt for the US and the EU, but to reposition themselves intelligently in a global reality in a deep reconfiguration. The new priorities come from other directions: economic security, technological autonomy, institutional resilience.
The Trump administration’s reaction to the Ukraine crisis highlights an essential truth: there can be no authentic strategic support in the absence of a clear economic development strategy, with solid roots in democratic values.
Romania has, in this context, only one way: to overcome the vulnerabilities that brought it to this position of fragility. There is a need for a deep reform of the institutions, of real political assumption and a vision that is not tributary to the moment.
