German bridge construction experts, using a remotely controlled heavy vehicle, checked the durability of another old bridge over Elbe. This Soviet -era bridge was recognized as an emergency and closed at the Czech border.

« The closure of the bridge for residents was an absolute disaster. Another bridge towards the Czech Republic is 25 kilometers to one side or 20 kilometers to the other. So it is the only bridge on the almost 50 kilometers of the river, » said Steffen Marx, a professor of civil engineering.

Fortunately, the tests have shown that the bridge, though well rusty, will withstand passenger cars and small trucks up to half a ton of weight. So the locals sighed more easily.

« We are happy because many people have to drive around. My son lives on the other side of Elbe and my other daughter is on the long road every day. What happens to the bridge is tragic, » said a local resident Hannelore Clemens.

On the other hand, the inhabitants of this former Soviet East Germany region were still fortunate that their bridge was inspected and included in the list of repaired before it collapsed.
