The City of Hvar on fuel pouring: ‘The situation is under control, and all responsibility is on INA’

In the Hvar waters, a diesel fuel was poured out of the INA gas station, which for several hours penetrated the land and coast of the cross port and then the sea. The competent services immediately responded, and according to the mayor of Ricardo Novak, the situation is currently under control of these environmental consequences are not catastrophic as it was at first.

According to professional services, it is a volatile substance that breaks down over time, which alleviates citizens’ concerns. However, certain amounts of fuel accumulated in the sheltered places such as the bay of Schikov flank, where mechanical removal is now being carried out using pumps.

The rehabilitation of the terrain is still ongoing, and the survey conducted will serve as the basis for further cleaning steps. The action includes firefighters, police, HGSS, nautical center, Hvar drainage, County Operational Center and Water Inspection. In the afternoon, a ship of a specialized cleansing company will be joined, which will use self -sufficient dams and cloths, without dispersant.

Mayor Novak confirmed that the responsibility for the incident is borne by INA, which is obliged to cover all the costs of rehabilitation and the damage caused.

This event reopened the issue of long -standing efforts of the City of Hvar to move the gas station from an inappropriate location in the cross port. More than ten years ago, the city included a new location for the station in the area between Krvenica and Vira. Despite numerous initiatives according to the competent ministries and the documentation made, the parceling process has not yet been completed, and the necessary consent have been waiting for more than two years.

In addition, the existing land and seafood is already included in the conceptual design of the future Sports port of Cross Luka, led by the port administration of the Split-Dalmatia County, and is currently considered by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.

« Unfortunately, the accident had to happen again to hear our appeals to hear, » Novak said, adding that he hoped that such events would no longer have to use as a warning that projects were key to the life of the islanders should not stand.

The City of Hvar will continue to monitor the development of the situation and inform the public with all further steps.
