The big question about the war in Ukraine. What about Russian gas? Does Rumen Radev make a new political project?

The 20th week of the year begins (out of a total of 51), in which again the most important and saturated with the greatest expectations will be the topic of whether the war that Russia began three years ago in Ukraine will end and when.

Questions whose answers at times seem in the field of fiction, this week will be put sharply and may be discussed personally between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski At a meeting in Istanbul On May 15.

And while there is ambiguity about whether such a meeting will really take place, it seems that the US and European leaders are insistent and united in the position that there should be an immediate stop of fire.

The weekend was dynamic from conversations on the subject. Initially, European leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland, supported by the US, are agreed That from Monday, Russia must unconditionally end the fire in 30 days. Otherwise, they threatened with new « large -scale » sanctions. This statement after the meeting in Kyiv was originally defined by the Kremlin as « confrontation ». Subsequently, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a midnight statement at which he offered Ukraine to resume direct negotiations interrupted in 2022, on Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul without pre -conditions. The first half of the ten minutes of Declaration Putin spent the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, to the guests who arrived on this occasion in Moscow, and how descendants of the Nazis threatened them and rejected the Russian « truce ». Putin did not announce the cessation of the fire on Monday, but expressed hope to negotiate one.
Subsequently on Sunday US President Donald Trump He called on the authorities in Kyiv to go on Thursday on the proposed direct negotiations in Istanbul. At the same time, he doubted that there would be a deal with a man too busy celebrating a victory in World War II, which would have been impossible without the United States. Zelenski reacted and announced on Sunday night that he would wait for Putin on Thursday in Turkey personally and called for fire to stop and end the killings.
Against the background of the full expectation on the subject in Bulgaria begins a week in which Bulgarian Head of State Rumen Radev It will submit to Parliament its proposal for a referendum whether Bulgaria to accept the euro from the beginning of 2026. The intention that caused a quake in the Presidency itself after Radev’s legal issues Krum Zarkov announced that the issue was unconstitutional, and therefore has left, so far, it has been supported by only one party.

And what about Russian gas?

Against the backdrop of optimistic expectations that there may be an answer to the question of when the war in Ukraine will stop, enterprising people began to launch ideas for resuming energy routesdried up because of hostilities. When and what are the opportunities for the resumption of Russian energy exports to Europe is unknown. Despite the economic attractiveness of the cheap Russian gas and oil, the European Commission has been pushing for a complete termination of the import of Russian fuels until 2027, publishing a « roadmap », although its acceptance of political resistance.

Currently, the European Union has stopped importing Russian coal and marine oil, but the gas still continues to cover about 19% of the union needs. Imports are mainly made by liquefied natural gas, Turkish Stream and until recently – transit through Ukraine. Some countries such as Slovakia and Hungary remain dependent on Russian gas, while others insist on a total embargo. The European Commission is considering instruments such as a ban on new contracts, the suspension of the spot market for Russian gas, customs duties, and even the announcement of a force majeure for termination of contracts without penalties.

Despite the destruction of some gas pipelines, especially the Nord Stream 2, the Russian infrastructure is largely preserved. The future of Russian energy exports to the EU remains unclear and depends on the complex balance between political decisions, economic interests and geopolitical risks.

Tension in Syria

In southern Syria, the most serious clashes broke out after the fall of the Bashar Assad’s regime – between the friendly community and the new government, supported by Islamist elements. The reason for the conflict was false news – an audio recording attributed to a friendly spiritual leader who offended the prophet, which caused violence and more than 100 casualties. Israel uses the case to intervene openly – military strikes, medical care and diplomatic actions in defense of the friends with which he shares a religious relationship.

About how friends turn out hostages in a complex geopolitical game between Islamist power in Syria against the background of the increasing military presence and influence of Israel in the country, you can read in the country in the country text of Angel Petrov. At the same time, there is a separation in the friendly community – some of the leaders are looking for a compromise with the new government, others like Sheikh Hikmat al -Higri insist on international protection and do not believe the government.

The new government in Syria includes few Druzi representatives, which strengthens distrust. Attacks from Sunni extremists at the end of April further sharpened the tension.

Will Radev make a new political project

Whether the proposal for a referendum on the euro, which President Rumen Radev will submit to parliament, criticized as unconstitutional and delayed, as Bulgaria has already committed to introducing the euro after the criteria is fulfilled, does not hide a request or test for a new political project of his.

This question is posed in analysis of Ivo Indzhov « Radev – from anti -corruption rhetoric to populism with the euro ». According to him, in the last phase of his term of office, President Radev clearly outlined his new role – from a fighter against corruption to a leading opponent of the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria. Despite his previous criticism of the model « Borisov – Peevski » and the mastering of the state by oligarchic interests, Radev surprised with a proposal for a referendum, writes Indzhov.

He suggests that Radev is preparing to enter party life – it is possible to create a movement (the name « Third March ») and even resign before the end of the term to embark on an active policy. With such a move, he could attract voters from Renaissance, ITN, Greatness and part of the BSP electorate.

Maybe a quake in the Sofia City Council

The departure of « Save Sofia » of the management coalition with « We continue the change » and « Democratic Bulgaria » opens new fronts at the Sofia City Council (SOC), writes Maxim Karadjov in textwhich analyzes the likelihood of the earthquake of the political divorce to affect the post of the chairman of the council.

So far, the most numerous coalition (22) has shrunk and leveled in numbers with the GERB-SDS group-with 14 councilors each. The former largest coalition has to broadcast its new chairman after Bonev left her. Will the future leader of the group be « Continuing Change » or from « Democratic Bulgaria »? From the first formation is the chairman of SOC Tsvetomir Petrov, so a representative of the second can be sought.

In the even more fragmented local parliament, his change no longer looks so far. Anton Hekimyan and Vanya Tagareva of GERB-UDS periodically noisily remind you that he was chosen as « temporary » At the beginning of the term – until the vote of the budget of the municipality. Petrov himself counters that the Law on Local Self -Government does not have a « interim chairman of the City Council » and once he was elected, he is the title of the post for the whole term. But he agrees that if one of the groups proposed it, it can occur at any session of the SOC and is a simple majority of 31 councilors.

So far, GERB-SDS does not directly raise the issue, but the temptation will increase.
