When in the spring of 2023, the publication of the competition for the best new Serbian word from London appeared on social media, in the organization of the « Small Library » from London, I am surprised that someone from the scattering is launched by such a competition. Don’t our people think about preserving and loving the Serbian language at all, I wondered. At the same time, I was ashamed. Didn’t we remember here to remember here?

Create a word – it is broken!

From spirituality to the spaces

First, 2023. About 500 words arrived at the competition. People sent their proposals by explaining the inspiration, meaning and goal of the word. The competition rules require that it is written.

Their explanations exuded the knowledge, wit and love for their mother tongue. There were wonderful and interesting stories, feelings, thinking and messages sent from Serbia, which from various countries throughout the Balkans and the world, by people of different education and profession (teachers, doctors, professors, writers, engineers …). The first year won my word « spiritual », as a substitute for a borrower depression.
I can’t say that I didn’t hope for a reward (hope always exists), but since I knew how much I response, the news about the victory was surprised and delighted.

They soon started calling me from radio, with television, from the newspaper, from the portal and asking me to tell them an inspiration and explain the meaning of my novovolice. Interest public was unexpected big and lasted for weeks. Social networks were « buzzed » from comments, arguments, attitudes for and against the winning word, as well as the event itself. He called me a friend from Belgrade and asked, « Are you aware of what war you caused on Twitter?! » « No, » I said, « Thank God I don’t have Twitter. That would be too much for me. »

All in all, the endeavor encouraged public talk about language and some time in Serbia were dealing with it, not politics, which is already a kind of progress.

I took part in the following year. I wanted us primarily that I support my suggestions with this event to which I was honest. The response was even bigger. The respectable jury voted the winning word – « spaces », which came up with and proposed a six-year elena, with an explanation – « when it snaps before our eyes. » The children’s thought is clear and strong. I liked the word for ease of expressions and memorability. At the same time, she was the meaning of the opposite of « spirituality » and she wore with her taste of hope and youthful.

Ancestors and descendants

Among the unfavorable attitudes about the competition, there were those who saw « fear of foreign and lending » and language cleaner, unnecessary and meaningless. Without intention to indulge in the defense of the endeavor, I have to notice that care of my own language cannot be even meaningless or excessive. It shows awareness of the importance of native language as an important factor in the cultural value and strength of the Serbian people. I can’t, with that in a relationship, I don’t mention a writer Momcilo Nastasic about whose pregnancy, Djordje Trifunovic says, « he asked for uneven words at the bottom of the Iskon-sea and listened to them unedited. » Do we have enough responsibility in front of the ancestors? And according to the descendants?

Modern student protests also found inspiration in words by the inspiration in the words made during the competition, so the inscription conquered: « the destruction won the spirituality. » The first proposal of the new Serbian word for this year’s competition has already arrived and reads « Studentoljeables ».

A call for a spiritual

From time immemorial, the word is the one that drives and creates. « In the beginning, it was the word … », the starting of the Gospel for John. The word, however, can be devastating. It is liability in the words that we pronounce the higher. The famous Socrates saying « Speak to see who you are » warn us of it. Therefore, I invite you to take part in the competition for the best new Serbian word this year as well, which will be held from 10. May to 30. September. Be ingenious, credible, fruitful and invest your spirituality into thinking about the language we share. Help we understand each other better, we connect deeper, so we understand more complete.
