« The baby slept uninterrupted for three days »

« It has been found that violence has a huge impact on children living in homes where violence is in place, » says Linda Dröfn Gunnarsdóttir, executive director of the Women’s Refuge, in the day.

In the episode, Linda Dröfn told the activities of the Women’s Refuge, its role and the prevalence of domestic violence in this country, along with Elísabet Sveinsdóttir and Guðný Pálsdóttir’s representatives on all the products of the fundraising campaign. This year, all products are addressed to the construction of a new women’s retreat to meet the urgent need of victims who need to flee their homes for violence.

The boy exhauses

The first women’s refuge was established in 1982 and such a refuge has been runless since then. Every street since then, the refuge has been run with the aim of providing women and children who are subjected to violence in close contact with support and safety in a homely environment where strong emphasis is placed on professionalism, warmth, flexibility and routine.

« It was just so interesting what she told us, Álfheiður Ingadóttir, former minister and parliamentary woman, that when the first refuge was opened there in 1982, and she was one of the women who had the lead, that there was a little two -year -old boy with her mother and he slept for three days.

« There is a little child who can’t really express himself, but the baby was so tired, » she adds and Guðný agrees:

« Yes, he might not have slept for a whole night, perhaps, without being under this stress, » she says, and probably has the right to stand where children living with domestic violence are said to live in significant stressful situations that can lead to ill health.

The children are sensitive

« It is this relief and it is still to this day basically this misunderstanding and often certain misconceptions that if the child does not look directly at the violence or will not be directed, then it has less effect. And points out that violence that thrives within the walls of households no less have a huge impact on children’s mental health and well -being.

« It takes a lot of management and follow -up with these children. »

How do you support these children, with all kinds of treatments?

« We are in close communication with child protection and child protection also involved in support of the children and there are psychologists and other things. Much that can lead to them not being able to meet their children’s basic needs while the situation is at its worst.

« We have a housewife who works every day so that when the kids come home from school, they wait for hot banana bread and it is food at the same time, so it is this frame, and these simple things really, it doesn’t sound very complicated but it’s so important that it is only a worker who focuses on this.
