“That’s what we’ve been dreaming of”

The Zoo, Holbæk Municipality, landowners and local residents have all played an active role in the effort to bring the toad back to the island.

« It is great to see that our work has borne fruit and that there are now adult green -bred toads in the wild at Orø. That they are found in an area where they have been extinct for 20 years is quite incredible. That is what we have dreamed of and hoping for – and it is fantastic to see – and hear – the effect of our efforts. we also do much other good for other species.

From away to cattle

The green -bred toad has been in a strong decline in Denmark for decades. From the 1940s to the 1980s, up to 88 percent of the species’ habitats disappeared. Today, Tudsen is completely away from Jutland and there are only a few places in Zealand, Lolland, Falster and in the South Funen Archipelago. Tudsen is on the red list of endangered species and covered by the EU Habitats Directive.

At Orø, the species has disappeared for two decades. But since 2008, Holbæk Municipality has been working on restoring water holes and surroundings that specifically fit the breeding conditions of the green -bred Tudde. But when the toads were gone, Holbæk Municipality reached out to the Zoo to cooperate on the delivery of toads for the discharge.

By 2022, the first 100 one -year -old toads and thousands of tailpieces from Zoological Garden’s breeding center were released on the island.
