Ten Padelvellir open before the end of the year

Padel enjoys great popularity in Iceland despite the young age of the sport. The aim is to open ten new Padelvöllur in Kopavogur before the end of the year.

Construction of a new Padelhöll next to the Tennis Hall is new, but six new pitches will rise there and will be opening later this year.

Hundreds of meters from the forthcoming Padelhöll, another four Padelvellir will open in August. There, for years, the Sports House has been holding out football fields, which will now be changed to Padelvellir.

An explosion in the covid

The country’s first Padelvellir was put into operation in the Tennis Hall in September 2019.

Jónas Páll Björnsson, Managing Director of Tennhallinn, says there has been little guests at the beginning, but there has been a huge increase in Covid.

The pitches in the Tennis Hall are only two, according to Jonas, they are booked from morning to evening.

« This has evolved rapidly after a quiet start. Interest has just increased. »

Padel combines the properties of tennis and skvass. The course is smaller than in tennis and is surrounded by glass walls.

Players usually play two teams together and compete to bring the ball over the net.

Because the pitches are smaller and the rules are simple, Padel is suitable for all age groups. Jonas says the sport is a beginner friendly than both tennis and skis.

Aimed at Padel’s relationship

Kópavogur’s tennis company maintains padel exercises for children born in the years 2007-2012, but a debate has been created by the Tennis Association of Iceland whether Padel should fall under the Union’s activities.

Now, however, it is in the process of establishing an independent padel connection. ISI has already approved Padel as a recognized sport in Iceland.
