Syrian President Al-Sharaa presents transitional government, remains at the head
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has announced the transitional government on Saturday that will govern the country for the next five years. Al-Sharaa appointed 23 ministers and will remain at the head of the government. The cabinet must bring stability into the country torn by war.
« The formation of a new government is a token of our joint will to build a new state, » said Al-Sharaa in a speech. The formation of the government is seen as an important milestone in the transition of the decades of rule of the Assad family and in the improvement of the ties of Syria with the West.
Diversity
The new Sunni-Islamist authorities of Syria are under pressure from the West and Arab countries to form a government that is more inclusive for the various ethnic and religious communities of Syria.
That pressure increased after the murder of hundreds of Alawitic citizens-the minority group from which the deposited leader Bashar al-Assad originates-on the west coast of Syria earlier this month.
The government receives one female minister, the Christian Hind Kabawat. She will become Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. Kabawat set himself for women’s rights and was a fierce opponent of the driven dictator Bashar Al Assad.
Yarub Badr, an Alawiet, has been appointed Minister of Transport. Amgad Badr, which belongs to the Druzen community, will lead the Ministry of Agriculture. The current Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs-who count as faithfulness of Al-Sharaa-keep their posts in the new government.
Earlier this month, Al-Sharaa presented a temporary constitution, in which, among other things, freedom of expression and political rights for women were laid down. The temporary constitution remains in force for five years, after which elections must be held. The Constitution states that Islamic law must be the most important source of all legislation, as was also the case in the old constitution.
