Let us remind you three -year -old Zuzia was hospitalized May 28, 2021 with serious injuries. According to investigators, the girl was tortured by her own mother, and her stepfather, Przemysław O., did nothing to protect her. After two weeks of fighting for life, the three -year -old died.
A sentence that raises emotions
According to the prosecutor’s office, Sylwia M. abused her daughter with particular cruelty. The girl was regularly beaten, which led to the tragic finale. At the time of the child’s death, the mother looked after three children and was pregnant with the fourth, which she had already born in custody. Currently, all children are in a foster family.
The District Court in Toruń sentenced Sylwia M. to 15 years in prison, and her partner, Przemysław O., to 6 years. The prosecutor’s office disagreed with this judgment and appealed, demanding for both punishment after 25 years imprisonment. However, on Wednesday, May 14, the Gdańsk Court of Appeal upheld the previous judgment.
Sylwia M. and Przemysław O. were found guilty of child abuse, but the court did not qualify their act as murder. Such a judgment was outraged by many commentators who believe that the punishment imposed does not reflect the scale of the tragedy that affected three -year -old Zuzia.
The mother committed terrifying deeds
During the announcement of the judgment, Sylwia M. and Przemysław O. were not present in the courtroom. A woman who was obliged to protect her child, in the Court’s opinion, committed deeds of exceptional cruelty. Instead of love and security, Zuzia experienced pain and suffering. Her stepfather – although he did not beat her – was aware of the violence that the girl experienced. He could prevent it, but he didn’t.
The case of 3-year-old Zuzia from Toruń shook public opinion. Is 15 years in prison for her mother and 6 years for her partner an adequate punishment for the death of an innocent child? Opinions are divided.
A foster family who looks after Zuzia’s siblings does everything so that children can start a new life. However, pain and trauma after losing their sister will remain in them forever.
