Switzerland’s stupidest burglars on tour in Brienz

Dümmer is never possible: thieves broke into the best monitored village in Switzerland

The municipality of Brienz has been accessible to the residents during the day for a week. Two burglars saw this a reasonable opportunity – but were obviously poorly informed.

On Sunday night, two people were on a burglary tour in the abandoned village of Brienz – and were quickly caught by the cantonal police. The village has been available for residents for a week for a week, they are allowed to return to their houses during the day between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., provided that the risk situation allows. However, nobody can stay there.

Apparently the thieves saw the ideal opportunity in this: in the village abandoned by humans, they committed “burglaries or creeping theft”, as the Graubünden cantonal police suspect. But the burglars were poorly informed. The cantonal police quickly discovered the two via the installed surveillance system. She immediately used several patrols to see the village and the surrounding area with dogs and drones. « Drones with thermal imaging cameras discovered two people below the village who fled on foot, » the municipality of Brienz wrote in a media release.

The burglars were arrested in the nearby village of Surava. The police also secured the stolen goods, as the municipality writes. « The dogs later led the police to objects that had probably been stolen and which the suspects had left behind on the run in the field. »

Not a very attractive break -in goal

Since the village was evacuated for the first time in summer, the municipality has built up a surveillance system. Brienz is closely monitored with electronic systems, said Mayor Daniel Albertin: « It is good to know that our surveillance system worked and that the suspects are behind the castle and bar. »

Albertin amazes the incident because the evacuated village is not a particularly worthwhile goal for burglars or looters. « The residents will have taken everything that is of greater value in the evacuation. » Nevertheless, it makes him angry when criminals try to take advantage of the emergency situation of the Brienzer for their machinations.

Call to those living: Check properties

The damage the burglars have done is not yet known. The village can only be entered again this Monday morning, nine o’clock. The police asks the evacuated to control their properties as soon as possible.

However, the community warns against entering the apartment or house if someone finds indications of a break -in or creeping theft. So traces would be blurred. Those affected should contact the police immediately. Police patrols will be available in the village and at the Belfort control point to examine possible offenses. Emergency number 117 also accepts reports.
