Switzerland wants the right to limit an immigration from the EU: it is like a fire extinguisher

The Swiss government announced on Wednesday that she wanted the right to limit the free movement of people from the European Union if factors such as net immigration, number of people traveling to work across the border or addiction to social assistance to a certain limite.

In December, Switzerland agreed to an agreement on the deepening of economic cooperation with the European Union, despite opposition to nationalists who consider the Union a threat of sovereignty.

The agreement must undergo a long process of ratification, and immigration is a convincingly most sensitive issue.

At the heart of the discussion is the so -called. a protective clause that could enable Switzerland to limit immigration under certain conditions.

Beat Jans Migration Minister told reporters that the Government wants a clause to be activated if net immigration from the EU, the number of people traveling to work across the border, unemployment or social assistance reaches certain levels.

« The protective clause is like a fire extinguisher on the wall. When it burns, you are pleased that it is at hand so you can quickly extinguish the fire before causing damage, » he said.

If Switzerland would activate the protective clause, the question would go to the common Swiss-European committee. If no agreement was reached, Switzerland could arrange arbitration.

State Secretary for Migration Vincenzo Mascioli said that Switzerland had been to consider the activation of the protective clause eight times since 2002, that such a model was already introduced.
