SVT was knocked out by overload attacks: deeply regrettable
During Sunday evening, SVT was subjected to severe congestion attacks. SVT Play’s website and app were down, as did SVT’s news site. Even during Monday morning, there was technical problems that affected both site and app.
Now the problems seem to be solved, SVT’s press manager Camilla Hagert announces in an email to DN.
« The attacks continued on Monday morning but had an extremely limited public influence, » she writes.
An overload attackalso called DDOS attack, is when a large number of computers at the same time overfire a website or other server with calls until its capacity is not enough and it stops working.
« This type of attack on society is deeply regrettable and we do not know who or who is behind. The disturbances have not affected our broadcasts in linear TV or our ability to publish VMA; Important message to the public, » writes Camilla Hagert.
Whether the attack is associated with the many technical problems that hit SVT in the spring, As late as last weekshe doesn’t comment.
Swedish Radio’s Technology Director Annsofi Eriksson announces that they have a separate technology environment from SVT and have not been hit by attacks recently – but that they are extra vigilant in the current world situation.
Lina Hallmer is CTO For Bonnier News. She confirms that even they have been exposed to overload attacks in the near future. Among other things, such an attack took place this week, which caused the Express’s site to go down, as the Media Dagens Media reported on.
– It is one of the most common types of attacks and is performed against all major sites at regular intervals. Often it is not noticeable because we build such strong sites that capture these traffic peaks. But sometimes traffic becomes too large or the attackers find new ways to do it, says Lina Hallmer.
The result then is that the site temporarily goes down, but Lina Hallmer emphasizes that it is not destroyed but is only temporarily disturbed.
– It is a relatively « stupid » attack that rarely or never leads to lasting problems.
Can you say something about whether there is a recurring sender for the attacks?
– There are strong suspicions about groups that would like to destroy us, and in some cases they leave traces. But since it is a common way to act, there is no special threat actor that uses it, but it is simply the simplest and most common attack method.
