SVT: Herring’s environmental toxin concentrations in Swedish waters

Dioxin and PCB levels have fallen by 30 % in five years, says a recent study.

Herring Environmental toxin concentrations have decreased off the Swedish coast, a new Swedish study shows. Reported on the study Swedish Broadcasting Company SVT.

In the study, herring was asked for 12 different locations from Swedish coastal waters. The fishing spots were in the Sveanmaa area, on both sides of Stockholm.

The concentrations of dioxin and PCB environmental toxins had fallen by 30 % compared to five years ago.

The lowest concentrations were measured in the south of the waters of Nyköping, the south of Finland, the highest in northern Plant at the height of Mariehamn and Turku.

Investigator Magnus Karlsson The concentrations were so low that non -risk groups could eat herring safely a hundred times a year. By default, dioxin does not come from other sources at all.

For children, adolescents, pregnant women, breastfeeding, or pregnancy, the recommendation is more severe: herring is only suitable for two or three times a year.

The Finnish Food Agency restricts the eating of large herring more than 19 cents long. Restrictions apply to children under school age and pregnant, breastfeeding and fertile women. For them, big herring is recommended at most every two months, or six times a year.
