Suspect who was arrested randomly on the back bus: 38-year-old man would be Georgian refugee (inland)
The 38-year-old Simon, suspect of the bus on the left bank, was arrested by the investigating judge, his lawyer Julie de Chaffoy confirms that. The man is suspected of murder and attempted murder. The suspect would be a Georgian refugee.
The suspect would not have an address in our country. During his interrogation with the investigating judge, he was assisted by an interpreter Georgian. The man would have stated that he is staying in the Netherlands as a Georgian refugee, although that is not clear on paper.
« In the meantime, my client has made a statement. He is working well in the investigation, » says the lawyer of the 38-year-old man who destroyed a random passenger on bus line 36 on Monday. She can’t say much about his psychological condition for the time being. The man appears before the council chamber on Friday.
The Antwerp police received a report on Monday around 2.30 pm about a person who behaved suspiciously when they boarded a bus on the Left Bank. However, when the police arrived, the drama had already happened: a man had put a 76-year-old passenger in the neck with a knife. The victim died of his injuries on the spot.
Video images show how the 38-year-old suspect is self-confident to the police and surrenders. The public prosecutor’s office started a murder investigation on Monday. « My client has been interrogated for a long time and has made a statement, » confirms his lawyer Julie de Chaffoy. « He cooperates well in the research. » For the time being, the lawyer cannot say anything about the psychological situation of her client.
The drivers of bus line 36 on the Left Bank do not run out on Tuesday. The line confirms that. The drivers are still too impressed by the deadly knife attack.
