Zeebrugge

Six months after suddenly 24,000 euros has disappeared from a vault from the Zeebrugse Scheepvaart police, the investigation was officially closed. Without a suspect or perpetrator. For months, searching did not bring clarification about who went on with a whole lot of cash. « Perhaps that person worked for the police, » says spokesperson for the Federal Police An Berger.

The case in Zeebrugge caused a lot of fuss in early September. From the vault of the Scheepvaart police office, 24,000 euros suddenly disappeared. The employee who had to transfer the cash to the bank each time made the discovery after a few months of sick leave. The money came from sailors who have to purchase some sort of transit visa. Depending on their home country, it costs between 25 and 90 euros. That amount is paid in cash, and then ends up in the vault in question.

Read too. 24,000 euros stolen from the police, and for the perpetrator it is mainly looked into the corps

Everything immediately pointed to one Inside Jobsomeone who works for the police. Because external parties have impossible access to the safe: a special pass and an access code are needed. But six months later, the investigation into the theft was closed. Without suspicious or persecution. This is confirmed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of West Flanders.

At the federal police they are bored with the case. « The investigation was not conducted by us, but by the general inspection, » says An Berger, spokesperson for the federal police. “The fact that the file is now classified, means that there is no now leads Or are more instructions. That is a hugely unfortunate matter. Not only for us, but also for the 130 people who work at the federal shipping police in Zeebrugge. They too have the right to clarity. «

Everyone suspected

Because at some point everyone was suspected. As long as nobody ran into the lamp, just about everyone could have given themselves 24,000 euros as a gift. « Perhaps the perpetrator is someone who works for the police. That would be very bad, » Berger continues. « But without a suspect or evidence, we cannot sanction or start a disciplinary procedure. So we cannot go further. In the meantime, the security of the vault in question is raised. »
