Surprised what the fire was great
Jón Viðar Matthíasson, fire chief in the capital area, says it has been surprising how much the fire at Hjarðarhagi was great when the fire brigade was in the garden.
He says in a conversation with mbl.is it is not clear why the fire was so great, but believes that a police investigation will reveal it.
Three adult men were transported to the emergency room following the fire, one of which is now dead and another is considered seriously injured.
Jón Viðar says it has been very good to extinguish the fire after the site was arrived. People have walked directly and concisely for the work.
Other urgent tasks
Jón Viðar says that after a report was received of the fire, the fire department was launched from all stations and the number of ambulances were deployed.
« However, we were at the same time dealing with other projects in the capital area that were very urgent. »
Therefore, it was not possible to send all available firefighters on the platform at Hjarðarhagi due to other urgent projects. It raises questions whether a response would be sufficient if many major projects would face at the same time.

Get support from colleagues
Jón Viðar says it can be very difficult for firefighters to take calls where it is clear that death has occurred. However, certain work processes are present in this way.
« The first step is a social support where we are discussing after such events, people often ask themselves if they could have done something better and so on. We have had it this way for decades and this has worked well.
Jón Viðar says it is appropriate that not many people have been home in the block when the fire caught up. He says, however, that since the fire has been in such an urban area, a large number of road users have been on the scene and witnessed the fire brigade’s operations.
