Surprise visit to Trump. They played golf
The President of Finland Alexander Stubb made a surprise trip to the US on Saturday to meet US President Donald Trump, where the two leaders discussed the consolidation of the bilateral partnership between their countries and played a golf match, reports Reuters.
« The President of the Stubb and I are looking forward to strengthening the partnership between the United States and Finland, and this includes the purchase and development of a large number of extremely necessary ice robbers, offering international peace and security for our countries and for the world, » Trump posted on the SA TRUTH Social platform.
The two presidents had breakfast together, played golf, and then had lunch. They also discussed foreign policy issues, including Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski met with Stubb in Helsinki last week, Reuters recalls.
The office of the Finnish president said in a statement that Stubb’s unannounced visit to Trump was informal. Trump arrived on Friday afternoon at his Mar-A-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida, and on Saturday morning he went to the golf club he owns in West Palm Beach for a golf tournament.
Senator Lindsey Graham announced in an X post that he joined Trump’s team, which was formidable! ‘, And also praised Stubb’s golf abilities,’ who was incredible ‘and played a Gulf when he was a student at Graham’s native state.
Trump’s meeting with Stubb took place one day after JD Vance vice -president moved without being invited to Greenland, a semi -automatic territory that is an integral part of the close northern ally of Finland, Denmark. Vance has accused Denmark of not doing a good job to keep Greenland safe.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his interest in the purchase of Greenland, part of an increasing international concentration on the Arctic Control Competition. The government of Denmark opposes such a measure, like most Greenland inhabitants.
Trump said on Saturday in an interview for NBC News that he will never exclude military force ‘to achieve his goal, but he said that he believes’ a good possibility’ so he can get what he wants without resorting to force.
Asked what message he would send to Russia and the rest of the world by purchasing Greenland, Trump said: ‘I really don’t think about it. I really don’t care.
Finland is the world’s largest manufacturer of ice roaring. About 80% of the ships were designed by Finnish companies, and about 60% of them were built on Finnish naval sites.
In November, Canada, Finland and the American administration of former President Joe Biden signed an agreement called Icebreaker Collaboration Efort to work ‘together on the development of world -class polar and arctic robbers through the exchange of knowledge, information and resources’.
Before his visit, Stubb had stated that he hoped to play Golf with Trump and that the diplomacy of ice cracks could help Finland to maintain good relationships with the US and Trump.
Finland divides the longest European Union border with Russia. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Helsinki made an 180 degree return to foreign policy after decades of military non -military, deciding to join NATO with Sweden.
