Support for summer school gives results
NOK 3.4 million in support from the Sparebankstiftelsen Sparebank 1 Northern Norway, contributed to 161 high school students in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark with the exam in 2024.
Targeted measures, to prevent pupils from falling out of upper secondary education. Since 2016, the Sparebankstiftelsen Sparebank 1 Northern Norway has collaborated with the Northern Norwegian county municipalities on measures, which gives students in upper secondary education some extra support to pass the exam and position.
Since its inception, the Northern Norwegian county municipalities have received NOK 9.5 million in support from the Sparebankstiftelsen for summer schools, spring schools, online schools and other measures for students who have trouble getting through the high school education. The initiative to get more through the school has produced results.
Here are some examples:
Finnmark: In 2024, Finnmark county municipality received NOK 1.3 million, which was used for summer school and online school for vocational students, as well as for homework help for students in study preparation. Of the 121 pupils, all of whom were in danger of not passing a standpoint in one or more subjects, as many as 97 students managed to pass the position, after getting some extra help from the school. In addition, 63 of these students managed to pass the exam so that they could continue high school training, or start higher education.
Troms: The results in Troms county in 2024 are also good. Here, Troms county municipality spent NOK 913,000 from the Sparebankstiftelsen at Summer School for 70 pupils, all of whom were in danger of not doing the exam. Of these, 40 students managed to pass. As part of the initiative, the Arctic City High School in Tromsø organized a conceptual course for minority language students. These are students who do not master Norwegian, but who wanted to start a vocational education program. Of the 40 minority language students who participated, 24 pupils are now embarking on their vocational education.
Nordland: Nordland county municipality has also offered summer school to its pupils, funded by Sparebankstiftelsen Sparebank 1 Northern Norway. In 2024, the county council received NOK 1,152,000 in support of measures at 8 upper secondary schools, from north to south in Nordland. Of the 210 young people who were offered a little extra support, 58 managed to pass the exam and/or get a diploma that gives them the opportunity to continue in education, such as apprentice or go into working life. It is a very good investment for Northern Norwegian society.
Raising in upper secondary education is a challenge throughout Norway, but the challenge is greatest in the northernmost counties. It is therefore very important to give the young people who have trouble meeting the academic requirements in the school, the little extra support that enables them to master the school, pass the exam and move on in life.
We are therefore very pleased to see that relatively moderate support from the Sparebankstiftelsen SpareBank 1 Northern Norway to reinforced school offerings for our Northern Norwegian youth, provides positive results in the form of mastery and professional development. We are looking forward to following this work going forward.
