Succeeded!: Bruno rides Tour of Flanders on old school bike without gears (Oudenaarde)
He wanted to show his students that the red school bikes are ok. And so he rode the entire round of Flanders. « On the way I only lost a Vijsje of my luggage rack. »
« I am tired of the whining of the students about those bicycles, » said Wilderode sports teacher Bruno recently in our newspaper. To prove the boys and girls of the Bernardus College in Oudenaarde that those red things were still good, he drove the entire round of Flanders there on Saturday. From Bruges to Meerbeke, including all cobblestones and slopes, more than 250 kilometers.
« From Bruges to Oudenaarde went better than expected, » he says. « Two colleagues cycled on real racing bikes. They were able to get me out of the wind, so we achieved an average speed of 25 per hour. » But then the real work began. « It was abandoned. I had to set foot twice. Twice on the Paterberg and once on the Koppenberg. I got over all the other slopes. »
11 am by bike
His special round lasted from six o’clock in the morning until half past eight in the evening. « In total I spent almost 11 hours on my bike. And in the meantime an attack on my stomach committed with all those winegums, rice cards and energy bars. » But the mission was successful. “I think the whining will be a lot less at school. (laughs) The bike has proven its virtue. I have had no bad luck on the way, not even a flat tire. By docking on the cobblestones I have only lost a Vijsje of my luggage rack. ” (JCD)
