Cinema students of Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema and Television Karpenko-Kary Alik Darman and Vladimir Prylutsky Two Ukrainian films of 1920 were found in the archive of student work. Earlier it was believed that they are stored only in the Russian Gosfilmothod.
As reports Dovzhenko-Center, students found the films « Trypillian tragedy » by Alexander Anoda-Anashchenko in 1926 and « The Secret of Rapid » by Pavel Valley in 1930. Earlier Students They found the Karl Brunner tape in 1936.
« These films are compositions, part of the set of starting materials of the movie. They are printed positive, rolling copies. This is a unique case, because if we can find positives in other funds and archives, then the set of source materials is extremely rare. ”Trypillian tragedy« is one of the oldest film -habitation in the territory of Ukraine lately, explains Oleg Olifermovie expert Dovzhenko-Center. The tape was made on the Yalta Film Factory of VUFKU.
« The film tells about the Trypillian campaign of the Bolsheviks in 1919 (in Soviet sources » Trypillian tragedy « ), a bloody page of the Ukrainian Revolution and the Civil War of 1917-1921, which became a cornerstone in the history and myth of the Communist Youth Movement in the USSR. »
The tape is made in the adventure genre with numerous scenes of shootings, fights and battles with the participation of hundreds of statistics, cavalry and artillery. Particular emphasis in the film is on the cruelty of the rebels and their massacres over the Bolsheviks.
This has made the film a spectator success, but movie producers and critics gave low grades. The tape was criticized for naturalism, banditry and demonstration of a negative example for the Ukrainian peasant. The author of the script, writer Gregory Epicsubsequently during Stalin’s terror will be convicted and shot « For participation in a terrorist nationalist organization. »

“The secret of a rapid” They produced at the Kiev Film Factory. This is Pavel Valley’s first film in the Dovzhenko Center collection and in general the first film of the director found in Ukraine.
Pavel Valley is a sign Ukrainian director and actor of the 1920s and 1930s. He worked at the young Les Kurbas Theater, « Laidramte », « Berezoli » and more. The Dolina’s filmmaker made his debut at 39 and in the next five years he made eight feature films at Odessa and Kiev Film Factory. Most of his works are now considered lost, no one has been digitized.
After the critical article-raid « Ideological Manivs », published in the magazine « Cinema » in 1932, the Valley actually departs from playing cinema and moved to work in « Technical Film », and after the war he heads the Theater Museum in Kiev.
