Students dissatisfied: « We want to be here »
Students of the Icelandic Film School are not reconciled with the decision of the Ministry of Education to be invited to complete their studies at the Technical School. All students of the school were present at the Student Association’s emergency meeting held at the Film School earlier today.
This is stated by Katrín Eir Ásgeirsdóttir, chairman of the Chinese, Student Association of the Film School, in a conversation with mbl.is, but the school’s student association has issued a statement calling for immediate action due to uncertainty about the future of film studies.
Will let her voice be heard
When a journalist caught up with Katrina, she was together with her fellow students at the Film School, which is now working to write an open letter to Guðmundur Inga Kristinsson, Minister of Children and Education.
« We called at such an emergency meeting today as we are going to let our voice be heard because we are not comfortable with this, » says Katrín.
« We’re going to do everything to try to keep our lines in the film school because we want to be here. »

Challenge the ministry to respond promptly
The Student Association’s statement states that students urge the ministry to respond immediately and ensure continued education in the film industry. It is necessary to resolve the position that has arisen and safeguard careful education in filmmaking.
Katrín says that students now want to come to their words and their views on the matter.
« One big family »
As has been reported, teaching has been kept in school despite the fact that the teachers have not been paid wages, and says Katrín has a great consensus has formed within the school walls.
« Our school is just one big family. Teachers teach us unpaid says a little bit I would say. »
Prefer electronics to accept the teaching
Electricity, which provides education for the electrical and technology industry in Iceland, has expressed their willingness to enter into talks with the Ministry of Education and Children’s Affairs to take over the teaching that the Film School has had in its jug and says Katrín all students of the school agree to get that solution through.
« We thought it came through and was the solution to this, but then somehow it was stopped. »

Call for immediate action due to uncertainty about the future of film studies
The Student Association of the Icelandic Film School expresses great concern about the uncertainty that exists about the future of studies in film making in Iceland after the school’s management company went bankrupt in March. The Ministry of Education’s consultation in recent weeks has been complete and it is clear that the government’s response threatens the education and future of film making in the country.
We call on the ministry to respond immediately and ensure continued education in the film industry. It is necessary to resolve the position that has arisen and safeguard careful education in filmmaking.
There has been a clear intention of the Ministry of University to move the university level in collaboration with an operating university, as is the case. The students of the school have a good time when completing the college and university and even more than one degree, and it is therefore clear that transfer in a hurry without all consultation to unrelated colleges, where there is no tradition for teaching in film art, solves no problem. The company regrets that a new Minister of Education will publicly comment on such issues without studying the history and facts.
Decades of grass root work must not be judged by lightness as a problem for some private school. Work needs to be continued in the University Ministry, where there is an understanding of this important work and all obstacles must be paid for that solution without further delay. The future and the future of students and Icelandic filmmaking is underneath.
