The popularity of Spanish in Lithuania began to grow since 2022, when Russia began the war in Ukraine. If the choice of Russian in the past among other foreign languages ​​was the leading, children and their parents are now eager to choose other languages.

“108 schools are not chosen by the sixth schools at all, and for example, in Vilnius, of almost 8 thousand. Sixths, only four hundred have chosen Russian, ”said Jonas Petkevičius, Vice -Minister of Education, Science and Sports.

« This is the decision to no longer form in grades 5-6, except for small exceptions in schools, » explained Vilnius Vice Mayor Vytautas Mitalas.

From the autumn of next year, the Spanish language will even be able to propose to choose as the first foreign language. If parents want it, the school will be able to organize Spanish teaching to children from second grade.

“About Spanish, as a second, parents have already asked us at least a couple of years ago. I think we, as a gymnasium, must also guarantee the continuity of learning, ”said the director Jolanta Knyvienė.

According to the municipality, more and more children want to learn Spanish. A year ago, 200 was studying in the Spanish capital, and now nearly 3,000 people come to Spanish lessons. pupils. Almost 6.3 thousand people learn Spanish throughout Lithuania. students.

Thus, the need for Spanish specialists is increasing, but finding teachers in this language becomes a real challenge.

“Some teachers have not been trapped, but sometimes even Spanish speakers working in Vilnius schools, or teachers of other languages ​​who have acquired this qualification. It still feels like a disadvantage, ”Mitalas admitted.

The municipality is trying to solve this problem. For those with higher education and qualification of the educator, they offer to retrain and become Spanish teachers.

“The state, for its part, started to finance the state. The ministry is copying Vilnius and is already funding some things about retraining itself, ”said Vilnius Vice Mayor.

« In a project coordinated by the European Union, which is called 'Continue, contribute, come and improve', 168 teachers who choose a foreign language are currently studying, » said J. Petkevičius.

Even a third of them study Spanish. Their studies will end next summer.
