Student Ghent high school with double jaw breach taken on end -of -year trip after attack by local youth (Ghent)

During the end-of-year trip to Spain, a group of students from the sixth secondary of the Sint-Barbaracollega was attacked by local youth. One of the students suffered a double jaw break. The boy is now back in Belgium and operated on.
The students of the sixth secondary of the Sint-Barbaracollege in Ghent are currently in Spain for their end-of-year trip. « A journey that actually went very smoothly until the incident, » responds director Diederik Costeur. « But in the night from Friday to Saturday things went wrong. »
A group of students was on their way to the hotel in Santa Susanna around 1 o’clock in the morning, a seaside resort on the Costa Brava, when they were suddenly attacked by a few local youth. They first started to make them verbally, but soon the situation got out of hand. The youth of Ghent were also physically attacked. One of them was in serious and a double jaw break.
Surgery
« The teachers were fortunately in the neighborhood, » says the director. « And the emergency services were also quickly on the spot to intervene. They took three students to take care of the hospital. One student was repatriated to Belgium and has already operated on. He can start his recovery. The other two did not break fractions. »
The incident has left a huge impression on the students. The director now wants to focus primarily on the physical and mental recovery. « We want to take care of them as well as possible if they are back, » says Costeur. « It’s a great pity. Our students were in the wrong place at the wrong time. »
Explanation
The students will make a statement to the local police in Spain on Wednesday. « An appointment had to be made for that, » says Costeur. « That must all happen with an interpreter. »
The two classes will continue the end -of -year trip and do not return home earlier.
