Strong Earthquake with magnitude 6.1. Warning against tsunami
Today’s earthquake is the second such strong shocks in the region during the week. Just a few days earlier, also a magnitude of 6.1 magnitude took place in the area of the island of Kasos, located south of Crete. This region has long been considered one of the most seismic places in Europe.
Greece. Earthquake in Crete
The earthquake took place on Thursday, May 22, at 8:49 local time. The epicenter was in the Mediterranean, about 58 kilometers northeast of the popular tourist town of Elounda in Crete. According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of shocks was 69 kilometers.
The earthquake was felt in significant areas of the island, and residents reported short -term but intense vibrations. Some people, according to local reports, decided to leave the buildings for fear of any secondary shocks.
Europe: Tsunami warning
In response to a strong earthquake, the European Mediterranean Sejsmological Center (EMSC) published a warning message. It indicates the possibility of Tsunami, calling the inhabitants of Greece, Turkey, Italy, France and Portugal to track information provided by the local authorities.
Experts recommend citizens and tourists to keep them vigilant and follow the recommendations of emergency services and local authorities’ messages.
Although no victims or serious material damage have been reported so far, the Greek fire brigade has announced the introduction of a state of increased readiness throughout the whole of Crete. All rescue units are prepared for possible activities related to the evacuation or the removal of the effects of the element.
