Strikes lame airports – hardly any operation in Munich
On Munich Airport If a 24-hour warning strike, only a fraction of the usual flights will take place today. « It is very quiet in the terminals, no rush, » said an airport spokesman in the morning. Since midnight, employees from the public service of the airport operators, ground traffic services and air security areas in various tariff conflicts have been on the ground, as a spokesman for the union said. The campaign should take 24 hours. In the morning ended up in Munich According to the flight schedule, a plane from Abu Dhabi, others from German airports should also follow. The respective airline decides which connections are failing, the spokesman said. « The passengers are informed by the airlines and are booked accordingly. » Many would not even start their way to the airport, most of them were prepared. « It's very relaxed. » The airport is expecting regular flight operations again for Tuesday.
If you want to fly from or to a German airport on Monday, you have to adapt to considerable impairments and failures. At first there was only talk of a warning strike on Monday, March 10, at Frankfurt Airport. Then it became clear: the Verdi union is widened Warning strikes on Monday all day on a total of 13 larger German airports. The 24-hour strike began on Monday night at midnight and is scheduled to continue until 11:59 p.m. In the morning, airports such as Bremen and Hanover report that the company stands out completely. Drastic effects are already emerging for Munich Airport on Sunday.
Only around 170 of the originally planned 820 starts and landings can probably take place, like an airport spokesman for the German press agency said. This means that almost 80 percent of flights will be canceled on Monday. 40 flights in Munich were deleted on Sunday. According to the ADV Airport Association, more than 3,400 flights are to be canceled throughout Germany on Monday. Around 510,000 passengers would be affected. In the current strike season, 800,000 air travelers could not have flyed as planned.
Airport spokeswoman: « The behavior of the Verdi trade union is unhighty »
Verdi provided a surprise on Sunday at Hamburg Airport. There, the union had called for a 30 -minute announcement that the work would be put down a day earlier than initially. For travelers, this has serious consequences: 144 arrivals and 139 departures were planned in Hamburg for Sunday. According to the information, only ten flights were able to take place on Sunday morning. The remaining departures and arrivals for the day have been deleted. This should also meet many families, because in Hamburg there are school holidays in Hamburg until March 23.
Opposite the dpa Expressed airport spokeswoman Katja Bromm in horror about the procedure: « The behavior of the Verdi union is unemployed ». According to Bromm, around 40,000 passengers are affected.
« The strike was necessary so that the strike effect is really felt, » said a spokesman for the Verdi union. The airport takes measures in the case of work refusions with announcements and use strike breakers. One knows about the effects for air travelers, but employers would now have to present an offer.
Strike at 13 German airports on Monday, March 10th
Employees of the public service and soil traffic services are called for strike at the following airports on Monday:
- Munich Airport
- Frankfurt Airport
- Stuttgart Airport
- Düsseldorf Airport
- Cologne/Bonn Airport
- Dortmund Airport
- Hanover Airport
- Bremen Airport
- Hamburg Airport
- Berlin-Brandenburg Airport
- Leipzig-Halle Airport
- Weeze Airport (North Rhine-Westphalia)
- Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport
At first the strike had been announced at eleven airports. On Saturday it was announced that two other airports will be struck on Monday: Verdi also calls up for a full-day warning strike at the Airport Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and at Weeze Airport in North Rhine-Westphalia. This call is aimed at employees in the air security area who are active in passenger control, personnel, goods and freight control as well as in service areas, as Verdi reports.
Strike at the public service: the next round of negotiations is imminent
The background to the strike is that in mid -March the next negotiation calls in the tariff dispute with the federal government and the municipalities are imminent. Employees at airports are also affected. At the same time, Verdi also negotiates for around 23,000 ground traffic service providers who are also called up for strike.
« We see ourselves forced to be forced to warning strike, since the employers have so far not submitted an offer in the ongoing collective bargaining for the employees of the public service and have not shown any willingness to meet our legitimate claims, » said Deputy Verdi Chairman Christine Behle. The actions were announced early to enable passengers to provide planning security.
Strike at airports: Airport association demands political consequences
Representatives from the air traffic industry see it differently. A press release from the ADV states that after the strike announcement on Friday, the affected passengers had little chance of looking for travel alternatives or postponing appointments. Due to the strikes at eleven locations « an entire country is cut off from air traffic », ADV general manager Ralph Beisel is quoted in the explanation. Verdi uses the strike power « at the expense of the travelers and at the same time causes considerable loss of sales for air traffic, » said Beisel, who appeals to the union, « to look for a mutually acceptable solution at the negotiating table ».
At the same time, the ADV boss demanded consequences from politics: « Airports are part of the critical infrastructure and must finally be protected from strikes. » Such strikes result in immense economic damage that not only affects the air traffic industry, but also the entire economy.
Airports Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich for the second time in the strike

The demands of the Verdi union in the public service collective bargaining
Verdi calls for a tariff increase in a volume of eight percent, but at least 350 euros more per month, and higher surcharges for work to be stressed and unfavorable. The training allowances and internship fees are to be raised by 200 euros per month. The union also demands three additional days off.
Employers have rejected these claims as unavailable. The collective bargaining will continue on March 14 to 16, 2025 in Potsdam.
Lufthansa and ADV are angry
Lufthansa as well as the ADV airport association have already criticized the previous strikes at the nodes of the transport infrastructure. Already to the first warning strikes in Hamburg and Munich, ADV boss Beisel said: « Two-day strikes that perform German metropolitan regions from international air traffic have long since had nothing to do with warning strikes. » (with dpa)
