Strengthening Europol and doubling its herds
Under pressure to combat organized crime more efficiently, the European Commission proposed the strengthening of the European Union Agency for Cooperation on law enforcement on Tuesday, Europol, by doubling its herds, informs AFP.
« Every day, we hear that criminals and criminals are one step ahead of us. This can only change if we give our means to act, » the European Commissioner Magnus Brunner advocated.
With over 1,400 employees, Europol is an agency known for its operations against organized crime, cyber crime or terrorism. During the last years, she has participated in operations for destroying networks or cyber pirates.
The European Executive wants to strengthen the role of Europol, to make it a truly operational police agency.
« We propose to make Europol a motor force of European Security, by doubling its herds, strengthening its mandate and improving its effectiveness, » Magnus Brunner advocated.
The European Commission also wants an action plan to protect children and fight against pedocriminality. It also seeks to develop a strategy to better combat weapons and money laundering.
The proposal of the European Commission will be subject to the approval of the European Parliament and the EU Member States.
