It is not intended to capture the economic relations with China through the punitive tariffs, says US Finance Minister Scott Bessent. Rather, President Donald Trump wants to expand them.

US finance minister Scott Bessent has defended the government’s line in the US Customs dispute with China. « Strategic uncertainty is a negotiation tactic. If we gave the other countries too much security, then they would show us in the negotiations, » he told CNN on Sunday. The occasion was a question about American small businessmakers who are under economic pressure because of the US tariffs on Chinese products.

Bessent said that he was « confident that at the end of these negotiations, both the retailers as well as the American people and the American employees will be better. China is a main supplier of favorable consumer goods for the USA – both for trade giants such as Walmart and Amazon as well as for many small companies. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he wanted to strengthen domestic production. However, many companies criticize that in the United States for numerous goods in suitable production facilities, specialists and sufficient infrastructure.

Bessent said that the pressure on China should not extend to all product groups in the long term. It is not intended to capture economic relations with the People’s Republic – rather Trump wants to expand them. During Corona pandemic, strategic weaknesses were recognized, especially for medication, semiconductors and steel. « The medium -term goal is to bring these strategic industries back as soon as possible, » said Bessent. « I think we will continue to act with China the products that these small companies speak of – with lower tariffs. »
