Stockholm Guide: « One of the world’s most beautiful cinemas »
What is unique with Bio Skandia?
– It is one of the world’s most beautiful cinemas, designed by Sweden’s internationally known architect. Many of Gunnar Asplund’s other buildings are visible in the city room, but Skandia is hidden inside a house body. It is a unique beauty experience. They were moved back to Stockholm in 1923 when neoclassicism was at its highest. A few years later, 1930, functionalism broke through. Interestingly, Asplund was one of the main characters of functionalism, says Astrid Hallenstvedt.
How big is the interest?
– We have had the shows before and the interest has been great. They are in Swedish, but I have been aware that foreign architect students have participated just to see the room. In the future, it is not impossible that we will have shows even in other languages.
What do you learn from the shows?
– Among other things, Gunnar Asplund collaborated with a number of young artists who had not yet made a breakthrough, but who would soon do so. For example, Einar Forseth, who is perhaps best known for the Mosaics in the Golden Hall in Stockholm City Hall. Exactly the artistic decoration received a lot of attention when the cinema was inaugurated.
What was the first movie shown?
– The premiere film was the « Nutrition ». You can still watch a movie on Skandia on the weekends. Today, the cinema is owned by the Stockholm Film Festival.
