Starting shot for the tram towards the European school

A groundbreaking can hardly be symbolic: with heavy equipment, a large cluster of sand on the road between the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Investment Bank was tilted (at) – as a photogenic setting for those responsible for Luxtram and representatives of politics.

With the symbolic act on the boulevard Konrad Adenauer on Friday, the construction work for the first extension of the Tram line in the Kirchberg district. As early as 2024, the project was unanimously launched by a financing law in the parliament and by a corresponding coordination in the municipal council of the city of Luxembourg.

The expansion branches off the existing line 1 and comprises the construction of an approximately 2.3 kilometer section (K2A) between the Rout-Bréck/Pafendall traffic junction and the European School. The route follows the boulevard Konrad Adenauer, crosses the future district of Laangfur and is added to three new stops. Commissioning is planned for autumn 2027.

A central element of the project is the sustainable redesign of public space along the green Tramtrasse. This runs in the middle of the street and improves the connection of the adjacent quarters. A new cycle path on the northern side of the street as well as extensive measures for traffic calming are also planned – for example through additional planting and the promotion of gentle mobility forms. Along the new route, an avenue should be over 400 trees arise – consisting of « transplanted » and newly planted specimens.

Minister of Mobility Yuriko Backes (DP) praised the « excellent cooperation » with the city of Luxembourg and Luxtram: « I am very happy because we see that the tram is a success in every respect. And here it is now being continued in concrete terms. »

In addition to Kirchberg, the ministry plans the other Expansion of the tram network. This year, the law project for an extension towards Route d’Arlon is to be brought into parliament. Another project for the route d’ESCH is being elaborated and is to follow in the coming year.
