SSI focuses on future health hazards
New tools and collaborations
Under the auspices of the Danish Veterinary Consortium, together with the University of Copenhagen, SSI has already focused on monitoring climate -cooling diseases in both insects animals and humans.
In order to better predict and deal with the health consequences of climate change, SSI wants to further develop its surveillance systems and create intelligent computer models that can simulate future scenarios for the consequences. In this way, it becomes possible to respond faster and more precisely.
This requires a broad collaboration, and SSI has already initiated dialogue with organizations such as the Danish Meteorological Institute, the Department of Public Health, the University of Southern Denmark and the European network Euromomo.
« We have launched a number of pilot projects and have many ideas and initiatives on the drawing board. But if health emergency is to become part of the future climate efforts, it requires society to invest the necessary forces and resources, » emphasizes Lasse Vestergaard, who is a consultant at SSI and recently contributed to the book Klima & Health.
He believes that Denmark’s ability to protect citizens’ health in a world characterized by climate change ultimately depends on the fact that we dare act now – not only when the consequences seriously affect.
