The Department of Agriculture and Food from next week will begin spring oral vaccination of foxes and raccoon dogs from rabies on the southeastern and north-eastern border of Estonia, BNS reports.

During the vaccination period and during the next few days, dogs and cats should be kept in the yards.

Vaccination will be carried out from May 19 to 25 in a strip of 50 km wide along the ground border with Russia and a width of 30 km along the Narva River, the department said. The scattering of the vaccine will begin in the south and southeast of the country, after this vaccination will be held in the border areas in Ida-Virumaa.

For oral vaccination of foxes and raccoon dogs, special baits are used, where the capsules with a liquid vaccine from rabies are hidden in the mass of fish flour. The scattering of the vaccine is carried out from small aircraft. The vaccine is not scattered over cities, settlements, roads and reservoirs. Airplanes fly low for a better viewing of the territory.

Found baits with a vaccine cannot be touched. If there is a real risk that children or pets can find a vaccine, it should be transferred to rubber gloves. If the vaccine contained in the bait fell on a fresh wound, into the eyes or mouth, they should be thoroughly washed with water (rinse with soap) and consult a family doctor.

If you have found a vaccine bait:
  • Leave her in place – do not touch it!
  • If there is a risk that children or pets will find it – use gloves when moving.
  • If the vaccine got into an open wound, into the eyes or in the mouth, rinse with a lot of water (for skin – with soap) and consult a doctor.
  • During the vaccination and several days after it, keep pets under supervision.

Rabies – an acute viral disease that affects the nervous system of people and animals, which is fatal. Animals with suspected rabies should be immediately informed to the veterinarian.
