Spies of the Federal Armed Forces should get more powers – Diepresse.com
The military intelligence services should be able to enter foreign IT systems in the future. The Ministry of Defense wants to get the reform on the way this year.
Whether Austria’s state security should receive more powers has been argued for years. The focus is less on the fact that more skills should also be granted to the intelligence services of the Federal Army. Defense minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) had already pushed to the reform last year, turquoise-red-pink now wants to implement it. The coalition agreement states that adaptations in the Military Power Act should enable « penetration into foreign computer systems abroad ».
A draft law has already been sent for the coalition -internal coordination. In any case, the reform should be implemented this year, according to Minister Tanner’s cabinet to the « press ». In a statement, Tanner states: « It would be urgently needed to create the necessary legal basis in order to expand and strengthen the powers of our intelligence services in order to be able to recognize threats from outside even faster. » This reform is not directly connected to the draft law on messenger monitoring, which the ÖVP Ministry of the Interior already sent in the beginning of April. This draft only affects the government of state security and intelligence service (DSN), which is located in the Ministry of the Interior and acts on the basis of the State Protection and Intelligence Act.
