Adding spicy spices to food can help reduce the caloric content of the diet.

This is stated in a study conducted by scientists from the University of Pennsylvania, writes Medicalxpress.

Researchers have studied how to add spices to dishes, such as Chile, affects the amount of food that people eat in one intake.

The results of their work, Posted In Food Quality and Preference, show that a slight increase in the severity of the dish makes participants to eat less.

From previous studies, we already know that when people eat more slowly, they consume much less. So we assumed that adding spicy spices to the dish can slow down the rate of food consumption. And decided to check it in controlled laboratory conditions« , – explained the author of the study Page Kanningham.

The team conducted three experiments with the participation of 130 people who were treated to be beef chili or masala chicken. The participants were divided into two groups: one of them ate meals with hot chili pepper and the other without it.

Scientists have analyzed people’s behavior during lunch:

  • how much food they ate;
  • how much water was drunk;
  • how much meals continued;
  • what were the speed of consumption (in grams per minute);
  • frequency and size of bites;
  • What were the appetite and the level of satisfaction of the dish.

The study showed that people who ate a spicy dish eventually consumed smaller portions than people from another group.

According to scientists, this is explained by the fact that the participants who were added to the dishes were ate more slowly. The food was in the mouth longer, so that the brain had more time to get a signal of satiety.

Everything indicates the potential for using chili pepper as a strategy to reduce the risk of overweight calories. If next time you want to eat a little less – try add a little chili it can slow down the rate of food« , – said the study co -author John Heis.

In the future, the team plans to investigate how sharpness affects other eating habits – for example, snacks.

We will remind, earlier researchers Find outthat cinnamon can reduce the absorption of medicines.
