Special Nature Reserve UVAC, Pearl of West Serbia
Traveling to the Special Nature Reserve Uvac is like entry into the mystical world in which nature appears in its most beautiful form. We drove on narrow, winding roads across western Serbia, between Ponikva and Zlatarski mountains, and came to the destination, which extends over 7443 hectares between the cities of Sjenica and Nova Varoš.
The first step after the reserve took us our breath. The canyon of the Uvac River, with its windings that erosion has created from ancient times, is a scene that impresses even the most demanding nature lover. We walked along the narrow paths and listened to the river murmur, which was breaking through the white limestone walls, stunned over the beauty that spread before us.
The white -headed hawks
At the top of one of the cliffs, we were greeted by a scene worth millions – the immaculate blue sky, which was « broken » by the white -headed hawks. These bitters of magnificent appearance, which calmly sail through the sky, gracefully spread their mighty wings with a range of two and a half meters.
Uvac is home to one of the most numerous populations of a white -headed hawk in Europe.
One of the biggest attractions of the UVAC reserve is definitely the white -headed hawk, the bite of the mighty appearance, which is adorned with magnificent wings with a range of two and a half meters. Photo: Snežana Krstic
The re -settlement of this species began in the 1980s and, in order to protect the area and effort of ornithologists, the population of these magnificent birds is now over a hundred couples. Every nest, carefully built on the walls of the canyon, is a story for itself.
The UVAC reserve offers nature lovers and nature conservationists observe many birds, with a special emphasis on white -headed hawks. In the immediate vicinity of their nests, observatories are set, specially designed to see these imposing birds in their natural environment when they fly, feed or care for their germ. We thought of a kind of paradise for the eyes and soul, when we kept our breath because of the beauty we had like in our hands.
A natural phenomenon over time
The Uvac River has a long history from the time of the creation of the Carpathians and the Dinaric Mountains. Her meanders resulting from erosion testify to the continuous functioning of natural forces. Construction of some hydroelectric power plants in the mid -20th century was formed by three reservoir lakes – Uvacka, Zlatarian and Radojska – which significantly changed the appearance and ecosystem of the area. Despite human interventions, the natural beauty and character of the UVCA are nothing to be impaired, but the reservoirs have added a new dimension to the landscape.

Ecotourism and adventure
The path took us down the path to the famous viewing point of prayer, from where a dream view of Uvac extends. When we stood at this place, we had to pinch ourselves to make sure our adventure was not a dream – and how we would not take that thought, but when we felt like we were at the top of the world, surrounded by heavenly beauty.
The reserve also offers a range of activities that are eager for adventure: kayaking on crystal clear water, bird watching, speleological adventure through many caves, the most famous of which are icy and Pećin.
We explored the UVCA meandre in the most beautiful way – with kayaks. When we sat in the boats on a quiet shore, our heart played with excitement … We saw incredible landscapes in front of us: the sun's rays played at the surface of clear water and created shiny reflections. The immaculate pure river, surrounded by inaccessible limestone walls, was like a stage for the experience that awaited us.
The sounds of nature that accompanied us during navigation – rustling foliage, advertising birds and the occasional sound of the wings of a white -headed hawk that flew high above us. We stopped paddling for a moment and allowed the river to carry us.
It was an ideal moment to really connect with nature, tear off from our daily lives and enjoy the simplicity and beauty of the world around us.
