Spain wants international weapons embargo against Israel

Spain calls for international embargo on weapons against the Israeli government to end the war and a humanitarian disaster in Gaza’s belt.

« We all have to agree on a joint embargo of weapons, » foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares told reporters at the beginning of the meetings of ministers of the so -called Madrid group in the Spanish metropolis on Sunday. « The last thing the Middle East now needs is a weapon. »

Albares called for the « current suspension » of the EU Partnership Agreement with Israel, a measure of Brussels currently considering, and imposing targeted sanctions against individuals « who obstruct the decision on two countries. »

If necessary, sanctions should also be imposed against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Albares said.

« Nothing that is discussed here is not directed against the state of Israel, » the leading Spanish diplomat emphasized. But he also said that « Palestinians have exactly the same right to peace and security as Israelis. »

There is no alternative to a decision about two countries to achieve long and righteous peace, Albares said.

In an interview with French television, France Info, the minister said: « What is the alternative? Kill all Palestinians? To bring them, I don’t know where, to the moon? Or give them Israeli citizenship? »

The Spanish government is one of the most critical governments in Europe about Israeli warfare in Gaza.

In September last year, she organized the first meeting of the Madrid Group.

Participants are high representatives of about 20 countries of Europe and the Arab world, as well as Brazil, and meet for the second time.

Since the beginning of the war, the Israeli army has killed more than 53,900 Palestinians and wounded more than 122,700.
