Space tourism in the female. Empowerment or waste of money?

The first trip was made to space only with female crew in over 60 years. Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn made the trip that lasted about 11 minutes and took the crew up to 100 kilometers away from the earth’s surface. The unforgettable experience was the subject of much criticism.

It was the second exclusively feminine flight in history, after Valentina Tereshkova, who traveled to space alone, on the Soviet Mission Vostok 6, in 1963. This time, it wasn’t a solo trip. The crew included the television host and companion of millionaire Jeff Bezos, owner of the company, Lauren Sanchez, journalist Gayler King, singer Katy Perry, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, researcher and activist against the violence of Gender Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission-Jeff Bezos company-then completed another successful lap. The trip lasted 11 minutes and the New Shepard rocket was 100 kilometers from the Earth’s surface, surpassing the Karman line, which marks the border between the earth’s atmosphere and space.

Returned to Earth, women had Jeff Bezos waiting for him. They were also supporting their friends, personalities like Oprah Winfrey and sisters Kris Jenner and Khloé Kardashian.

For women who went to space, this was a unique experience. « I feel very linked to love, this experience taught me how much love is inside me, » said Katy Perry, who took a daisies on board because, he said, « ordinary flowers, who grow in all conditions. » Upon arrival, he kissed the floor. «It is the greatest sensation, it is the delivery to the unknown. I could not recommend this experience anymore ».
Lauren Sánchez also described the experience: “The earth seemed so… silent. We look at her and thought, ‘We’re all together in this’.
For Gayle King, who is even afraid to fly, was « really quiet and peaceful. » «It’s a reminder of how we need to do better, be better. Do better, be better human beings, ”he defended.

Criticism
As with everything in life, it is not always pleased with Greeks and Trojans. Bezos, who is the second richest man in the world and also owner of Amazon, has driven space tourism and sells such experiences to over 220,000 euros the ticket. At least that’s what is said, given that the company does not publicly disclose the prices it shares. Of course, after this trip, many questioned the need to spend so much money for just over 10 minutes. “So much money is spent to go to space while there are many people who can’t even buy eggs. What is the purpose of this? Is it historic that they had done a walk? It’s a little greedy, ”said actress Olivia Munn, who added:“ Spatial exploration serves to increase our knowledge and help humanity. What are they going to do there that will improve our lives here? It’s a huge expense of resources, ”he said.

There were also criticism here. Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior, who has been playing several roles out there, was one of those voices: “This is the opposite of empowerment or feminism. It’s really embarrassing to see this waste of money, resources, pollution, etc., just to put a group of women in a space and sell it as the power of women, ”he wrote on Instagram. And it was further, arguing that the money spent « could have gone to any other group or cause marginalized », detailing: « Single mothers, mental health, children of reception, public education, women’s health ». « It’s crazy and absurd, » he said.
In turn, model and actress Emily Ratajkowski said she was « disgusted » and that the operation « is beyond parody. »

Gayle King made a point of commenting on criticism. «There is nothing futile on our trip. I am very disappointed and saddened by this hatred. We did this to inspire other women and girls, please don’t ignore it.
