South American Press FIFU: Give 64 teams on the SP
President of the South American Confederation (Conmebol), Alejandro Dominguezaddressing Fifi directly, he officially advocated that at the 2030 World Cup, which will be at the centennary of the first edition and which will be held on three continents, the 64 national teams.
The 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain, Morocco and Portugal. But for the 100th anniversary of the first edition in Uruguay, three meetings in that country are planned, as well as in Argentina and Paraguay. The World Cup, where the number of participants has grown constantly over the years, will now increase the number of participants from 32 to 48 for the next 2026 edition in the US, Mexico and Canada.
– We suggest that for the 100th anniversary it is expanded to 64 teams that will play on three continents, at the same time, so that all countries can experience the World Cup – said Alejandro Domonguez on Thursday on the 80th Congress of Conmebol.
This extension could allow South America to host not only three games in 2030, but the entire first round of one of the groups. The idea was presented last month by the head of the Uruguayan Football Association Ignacio Alonso during a meeting of the International Football Federation.
Fife President Gianni Infantino described the proposal as interesting and should be « more closely analyzed ». UEFA leader Alexander Ceferin rated all this with a « bad idea » on April 3.
